Rental FAQs

Who can rent?

Anyone who has done at least one surf lesson. A basic knowledge of surfing is required. People under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult at all times during the rental.

What are the Prices?

€10 for wetsuit only, €15 for a board only and €20 for board and wetsuit. Cash only.

Payment, Cash or card?

Due to where the surf school is and lack of a decent internet connection, we do not accept card on the beach. There are a few ATMs in Belmullet town. Cash only!

How do I book a rental?

Check out or Instagram and facebook stories. No need to book just come to the beach. Daily updates will be posted to the Instagram and facebook stories. Available times will change daily due to conditions and other groups. Cash only!

Will the waves be good?

We post daily surf reports and updates on our Instagram and Facebook stories so check them out. It is very rare that we have no waves on Glosh Beach.

What do I need to bring?

Swimming togs/bikini, a Towel and some footwear to walk down to the beach. (flip flops, sandals, crocs or shoes) We would advise bringing some warm clothes for after even on the sunny days. If you have a waterproof watch that would be handy to see the time if not, we can let you know. Would be a good idea to bring some food since surfing is great for building up an appetite! Card is not accepted at the beach.

Where do I go?

We are located on Glosh Beach. Around 15 minutes from Belmullet town towards Blacksod (an fod dubh). If you are driving from Belmullet towards Blacksod, when you come to the town of Eachliem (around 15 minutes from Belmullet) take the right turn after John Joes Pub. The beach is 2 minutes down that road on the right. We have signs along the road. Or you could just find us on google maps.

How long is the rental?

Rentals are for a maximum of 2 hours. If you have no way of telling the time on the water let us know and we can wave at you from the beach if needed.

Can I get a board for a few days?

You are more than welcome to rent equipment for a few days in a row. Let the staff know and we can tell you the best times when you are around. You cannot take the equipment home with you.

What type of equipment is available?

We have a lot of different size wetsuits. The wetsuits are 4:3 thickness which is more than enough for the Irish summer. You will be nice and warm. We have several different size boards to choose from. All our boards are foamies so they are perfect for learning or experienced surfers looking for a bit of craic! I always say, it is impossible to have a bad surf on a foamie!

Is renting safe?

There is a risk in surfing. Tonn Nua Surf School will not run surf lessons or equipment rentals if the conditions are not suitable.

Can I take the equipment to another beach/area?

All equipment has to remain at Glosh beach.

Where will I put my clothes/belongings/keys?

You can leave your belonging with a staff member and they will be kept safe while you are on the water. Most people leave their clothes and belongings in the car and give us the key to mind.

Summer Camp FAQs

How much is a camp?

Cost is €125 per person for the 5 days.

Group rates available:

4-8 people €115 per person

9-16 people €105 per person

€50 per child on booking and the remaining balance to be paid in cash on the first morning of the camp.

Payment, Cash or card?

The deposit will be paid when booking through the website and the rest on the beach on the first morning. All Payments at the beach are Cash only! Due to where the surf school is and lack of a decent internet connection, we do not accept card on the beach. There are a few ATMs in Belmullet town.

What is the minimum age to join a camp?

The camps are for children under the age of 16

For kids under the age of 10 they need to already be comfortable in the water and able to manage a small surfboard on their own if needs be. This is really a decision for parents as we can’t know for sure until we take the kids into the water.

For kids under the age of 12 we ask that a parent of guardian remains at the beach for the lessons. It’s a great time to go for a walk along the beach or relax and enjoy the beautiful views.

How is the camp laid out?

The camp will take place over 5 days (Monday to Friday). We will start at 9.30 and be finished by 11.30 everyday. The times may vary slighty depending on tides and conditions but they will be as close to these times as possible. The daily lessons will progress with the ability of the group and will be aimed at improving throughout the week. We will also teach some water safety and beach knowledge during the week. We aim for your kids to have fun and learn how to surf.

Who can take place in the camp?

Anyone between the ages of 10 – 16 years old. Friends, siblings and cousins are all welcome. We have had many children join the camp on their own and after the first wave they are best friends.

Do kids need to be able to swim?

A basic swimming ability is needed. Our classes are held in waist deep water and all our instructors are qualified lifeguards. The camps are run with a strong safety-first emphasis. If the child is nervous, we ask the parents or gaurdians to remain on the beach during the lesson for at least the first day just so they can get comfortable with waves.

When is the remainder of the payment made?

After the deposit has been paid the remainder is due on the first morning the camps start. Card is not accepted due to bad internet on the beach.

Will there be Gaeilge in the surf camps and lessons?

All our staff have Gaeilge and will be more than happy to chat away as Gaeilge. All our camps and lessons are thought with a mixture of Gaeilge and English. You do not need to be able to speak Irish to join but you might pick up a few words.

Do I need to do the full 5 day camp or can I just book for a day or 2?

The camps are aimed at progressing over the whole week. To get the full experience we advise you join for the full 5 days. You can only book and pay for the full 5 days.

Do I need to book the camps in advance?

Yes, camps are probably the only lesson we offer that needs to be booked in advance as they do sell out quickly. €40 deposit on booking to secure your place on the camp. The earlier you book the better.

What are the dates and times your camps run?

The camps run every week during July and August, Monday – Friday , 9.30am – 11:30am. 5 consecutive days. The times may vary slightly depending on tides and conditions but they will be as close to these times as possible.

What time should we arrive?

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time. On the first morning of the camp please be 20-25 minutes early. The camp will start when all the kids are in their wetsuits which can take some time. We ask parents to remain and help with dressing them. We ask you to arrive early so we can spend as much time on the water as possible.

What do kids need to bring?

Towel, swimming togs, a bottle of water and warm clothes for after. If it’s warm, then sunscreen but please put it on a little in advance so it is not running into their eyes the minute they hit the water. If they need any medication (inhalers) please bring it along.
